Why Patience Truly Is a Virtue

With my own business, I suffer from what I assume a lot of people suffer from: impatience. I want things done. Now. The resulting difficulties that I experience are lack of focus, a desire to do too much, and the inability to learn from mistakes. I wind one toy up, let it go, and rather than wait to see if it will successfully cross the finish line, I wind another toy up and let that one go, too. Unfortunately, if we’re sticking to the toy analogy, my toys end up bumping into each other, reducing the chance of any of my toys reaching the finish line, and I’m unable to learn and make adjustments to improve success.

The good news for me is that I have set up resources to reveal this blind spot of mine, and I rely on them consistently to make sure I’m not doing what I naturally gravitate toward. If you are like me, here are some tips to help you:

Stay Focused

The best thing you can do, is reminder yourself to be patient. For me, I have my wife. She’s the epitome of patience, and she reminds me on a daily basis to “wait and see what happens.” Thank God for her. When you can successfully reign in the desire to do, do, do, you become more enabled to stay focused on goals and tasks that have the most value to you and your company.

Do Less

When you’re impatient, you may find yourself throwing shit at the wall to see if it sticks. And when you’re in that mode, both you and your brand are in danger of losing focus, and making a simple thing cluttered. Remember to stick to doing the things of most importance, and have the greatest chance of success.

Learn from Mistakes, Tweak, and Repeat

Rather than succumbing to the desire to do more, diagnose the health of your current tasks. Evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, tweak when necessary, and repeat. If they’re a total flop, that’s okay. Figure out why, make adjustments, and get re-engaged with new goals in hand.

Whether it’s a new website, a print campaign, or a product launch, just remember to stick to your original plans. Remember to be patient, and you’ll be much more successful in the end.
